DNV GL has launched the first standardised certification process for subsea equipment and components.
Subsea expert Anders Husby said: “We’re trying to answer the question of how both operators and suppliers can get what they want and the topic of the standardisation is at the top of the industry’s agenda.”
Anders insisted standardisation would soon become the industry status quo, much like the internationalisation of operations eventually became an industry staple.
Speaking at this year’s ONS, he said:”When I started working in the subsea industry 20 years ago we did all the subsea work from Norway. We were really proud when we hired a Swedish engineer because we could call ourselves international.”
He now hopes standardisation will be as widely accepted as operating on an international level.
The certification scheme was developed in a bid to increase quality control.
Bjorn Sogard, segment director for subsea at DNV GL, added: “Standardisation is widely agreed to be the best solution to address many inefficiencies in most industries. Subsea operators are addressing standardisation mainly in terms of interfaces and interchangeability. With this new certification scene for subsea equipment and manufacturing components, DNV GL, as the industry’s leading standard-setter, aims to streamline quality and manufacturing processes – an area where great efficiency can be made.”
He added an industry overhaul in standardisation could ultimately reduce costs on the operator’s end and increase predicability for suppliers.
