Record numbers from across the global offshore oil and gas industry are expected to attend Subsea Expo 2015 in Aberdeen this week.
Europe’s largest annual subsea conference and exhibition showcases the expertise and technology of a UK industry generating about £9billion in revenue annually and supporting around 60,000 jobs.
More than 6,000 people are registered to attend the event, organised by trade body Subsea UK, which takes place at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre from Wednesday to Friday.
The visitors include dignitaries and senior industry figures from Africa, Brazil, Japan, Mexico Nigeria and the US.
UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), which has organised several of the inward trade missions, will be running a series of sessions on global market opportunities as well as one-to-one meetings with in-country experts who can advise on exporting to new markets.
Subsea UK chief executive Neil Gordon said: “The decline in oil price has not dampened Subsea Expo.
“Indeed, the need to come together to debate the issues, find new ways of working, look at how we can best deliver efficiency and how to spread the risk by exploring wider, global opportunities is more important than ever, as the number of registrations reveal.
“With the pressure on to reduce costs, Subsea Expo will be very focused on how the subsea industry can play its part in sustaining the industry at this crucial time.
“As has been the case in the past, where there are tough times there are also opportunities – and the rewards are still out there. With a fresh approach and collaboration, we can rise to the challenges and ensure the UK’s energy sector continues to lead the world.”
The event’s plenary session will provide an overview of the industry and stimulate debate with presentations from Phil Simons of Subsea 7, David Lamont of Proserv, Apache’s Mark Richardson, EnQuest’s Neil McCulloch and Peter Blake of the National Subsea Research Initiative.
Topics up for discussion during the event include global opportunities, key projects around the world, the marine renewable-energy market, standardisation and optimisation, pipelines, remotely operated vehicle and inspection technology and research and development.
For the first time, the conference will provide a “spotlight on technology” session, where a dozen companies will have 10 minutes each to pitch their latest developments and thinking to the industry.
Subsea Expo has grown in size and stature since 2004, becoming a globally recognised event and the second largest oil and gas gathering in Aberdeen after Offshore Europe.
