Rebecca Wain, a 24-year-old geologist with Statoil in Aberdeen joined the Energy Voice panel ahead of Offshore Europe next week.
The rising star spoke eloquently about the challenges faced by her peers in finding employment during the downturn in the industry.
Wain gave her thoughts on the panel discussion speaking to Energy Voice after the research from Energy 2050 – Securing Our Future was discussed to a sold-out crowd of more than 300 people.
I thought the panel discussion went really well I thought it definitely highlighted some of the key issues. For me just new into the industry I think it definitely highlighted other people’s opportunities and young people coming into the industry how they feel and maybe what they want from the industry and how they can move forward with that.
We should try and initiate more ways for young people to get into the industry so that in the future these people can provide the talent and really take on the future of the industry.
I think I took every opportunity that I got – large or small – and spoke to everyone I could speak to. My three p’s are really my key for young people at the moment. I think we need to be positive, we can’t control the oil price and there’s no point worrying about something that we can’t control. So be positive and know it will pick up.
Without being positive we have nothing, so take that forward. We also have the potential with future jobs and to take them on in the future and we need to remember that.
Thirdly we should persevere and grasp every opportunity we can because at the end of the day if you stop trying it is never going to happen so try and grasp every opportunity you can take.
Hopefully the industry are going to start leading on this and recruit, train and develop people in the next generation.
I think ultimately, the industry as a whole, needs to take responsibility for the future because if you don’t think about the future there won’t be one. Opportunities for young people, whether that’s two weeks experience here or there or something more because who knows where that might lead.
