Oil & Gas UK chief executive Deirdre Michie said the industry has turned its first corner in the market downturn and called on the emerging innovators to continue to persevere.
The OGUK leader insisted despite tightened budgets and slowed hiring, new recruits must look beyond the knock-backs and remember the sector’s potential.
“I think we are moving in the right direction,” she said.
“I think the signs are looking more positive. I think a corner has been turned, so it is going the right way but I think things are still going to be difficult even as we are travelling in the right direction.”
Deidre also answered questions submitted by young people ahead of Energy Voice’s summit with Sir Ian Wood.
She added: “There’s an element of resilience that they need to kind of make sure that they keep trying and keep going after the jobs. The jobs are there and will continue to be there. I know it’s difficult and I know it can feel really personal when you’re applying and you’re getting the knockbacks and I think that feels difficult on a really personal level.
“But it’s worth persevering because when you come into this industry you can have a really amazing career.”
