2013 is set to be the biggest Offshore Europe in history as thousands of delegates from around the globe congregate in Aberdeen, Europe’s oil and gas capital, to discuss the future of our industry.
The growth of this event is mirrored in the industry – 450,000 jobs are now supported by oil and gas in Britain, and investment, at £13.5billion this year, has never been higher.
In addition, the experience of the last 40 years has encouraged the development of a world-class supply chain with a proven track record both at home and across the globe.
The tragic helicopter crash of August 23 has, I am sure, touched every single person in the sector and reminded us all of the importance we must all place on safety.
We must continually strive to improve our performance in this regard and doubtless the sad loss of four colleagues just days ago will be in many conversations at this year’s Offshore Europe.
Few would argue that the North Sea is a key piece in the global energy jigsaw puzzle.
Those of us with already enduring careers in this industry have witnessed great change and with it dramatic progress over the last 40 years.
Britain now leads the world in subsea engineering and we have matchless capabilities in well services and right across the supply chain.
My hope is that this year’s Offshore Europe will allow us to reflect on our practices, promote our progress, and learn from others to plan for the next half-century.
I’m proud to be the chief executive of Oil & Gas UK, the leading trade association which represents over 370 members from across the oil and gas supply chain.
In my role, I’ve had the very welcome opportunity to meet thousands of the fine people working in our industry across the UK: from the global head offices of production companies in London to centres of innovation in Aberdeen and small family-owned manufacturers in the north-east.
All of these people have one thing in common – the desire and drive to grow not only their own businesses, but to grow and improve our industry as a whole and to make it a safer place to work.
I’m looking forward to meeting old friends and making new ones this year at Offshore Europe. Please do visit stand 2A109 and tell us about your business, your ambition and your hopes for our industry.
