The spate of Super Puma helicopter accidents in recent years is to feature at an offshore safety conference in Norway this week.
The Sola conference will look at helicopter safety and security issues in Norway – with the fatal accident off Shetland last month expected to inform discussion.
“It is clear that the helicopter crash in the British sector have helped to make our program particularly relevant, but the accident is not the main focus of the conference,” organiser Håvard Haugen told Aftenbladet.
“Our starting point is the dramatic increase of the use of helicopters in mainland Norway and the issue is whether it is true that it is the lowest bids will win, and if so, what the consequences of it.”
Along with the four serious accidents involving UK Super Pumas since 2009, an AS332 had to make an emergency landing on its way to Stavanger ten years ago.
“Fortunately, we are spared such accidents on the Norwegian continental shelf, but it is important to keep the focus on security in periods without accidents,” said Haugen.
