A row broke out last night after a union accused prosecutors of suppressing information about an offshore copter crash in the North Sea five years ago.
The RMT claimed families of the 16 men who died in the accident off Peterhead involving a Super Puma had “lost confidence” in the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
This was “due to the failure to explain why no one would be prosecuted for this tragedy and for suppressing information”.
A fatal accident inquiry is scheduled to start in Aberdeen on January 6 next year.
A Crown Office spokesman said: “It is wholly inaccurate and irresponsible to suggest we suppressed information. Detailed investigations into the circumstances of the incident, including a review by the Civil Aviation Authority of the available evidence and reports, found no evidence of criminal conduct.
“Crown counsel considered all of the information and in January 2013 decided that no criminal proceedings could be taken because there was insufficient evidence of a crime having been committed.”
The spokesman said the families of the victims had been advised of this development at the time.
