Experiencing the energy industry first hand is the best learning tool toward a career in the sector, a graduate engineer has discovered.
Edinburgh-born and Glasgow-educated Ross Cowie traveled across Scotland to settle down in Aberdeen, where job opportunities were the greatest.
“I felt I needed to come here to get a job; there are just so much more opportunities out here than in the central belt,” Cowie told Energy Voice.
Having completed his masters course in mechanical engineering with a distinction, Cowie found the Graduate Engineer scheme at Ace Winches his biggest learning experience yet.
“It’s good, it’s been a challenge – it’s quite a big jump going from university, where it’s all theoretical, and then getting thrown into the deep end when you’re actually designing machines and seeing what you’re designing actually being built.
“At university I focused on the subjects I liked, so it was more mechanical subjects. Now I’m finding I need a better appreciation of other things, so I’ve been on a few training courses and I’m starting to develop my skills in hydraulics and electrical.”
Ross Cowie is one of our career Q&A interviewees in the Energy Graduate supplement, available free with The Press and Journal on Monday, October 28.
