Graduates, alongside our trainee designers and apprentices, are the future of the energy industry and of Amec. We know we can’t just focus on the resourcing needs of today, however pressing they may be.
This is a long-term industry, with continual challenges which we will need new people to solve, and to lead us in the future.
We are really a people business, so the quality of our people is vital. I think our graduate programme is world-class, and I know the team is really proud of the quality of applications and the fact that graduates choose Amec over other options such as major IOCs because of the quality of our scheme. I’d also like to add that our trainees and apprentices are world-class too. Although I’m talking about graduates here, we are just as proud of our trainees.
We don’t just start with the universities when looking for graduates. We have built relationships with primary schools and with secondary schools, to attract future graduates to look at our industry.
We have developed a rigorous programme of graduate selection which includes not selecting the best technical students, but assessing for ability to work in teams, and to fit into the challenging life of projects.
At the other end of the scale, we have developed a unique engineering leadership programme to follow after the four-year graduate programme to help ensure that we retain our graduates within the industry and the company. This is a pioneering programme, developed in Aberdeen for our oil and gas business, but which we are now looking to extend both globally, and across all our functions, and to our trainees.
This is all a huge amount of work, but when I and my colleagues meet the new intake of graduates and see their enthusiasm and their potential, I know it is all worthwhile.
