Travel offshore will be business as usual, according to Step Change and Safety’s Les Linklater.
The team leader spoke with Energy Voice in the run-up to the April 1 deadline set by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Under the pending terms, oil workers unable to fit through aircraft emergency windows while wearing their survival suits will not be allowed to board helicopters. However, the CAA later softened the blow insisting no one would lose their job overnight.
In his sit-down interview, Les echoed the guidance saying the vast majority of the workforce will continue to travel offshore despite the planned overhaul.
Les insisted it was more about calculating the industry’s size before ensuring the proper steps were in place to mitigate and accommodate those measurements compared to making decisions based purely on weight. New tactics including developing an “extra broad” category identifiable by special armbands are all in the works.
