Robert Gordon University (RGU) student Alexandra Pate, 20, has won the competition to design a trophy for this year’s Offshore Achievement Awards (OAAs).
The design brief was to capture the awards’ key themes of “innovation, creativity and out-of-the box thinking”.
Miss Pate’s winning entry has already led to a prototype, which will be developed into a final version – made of steel and granite – for winners of the OAAs at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on Thursday, March 12.
The annual awards are organised by the Aberdeen section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, which challenged third year students studying 3-D (ceramics, glass, jewellery and product) design at RGU’s Gray’s School of Art to come up with a suitable trophy.
Ian Phillips, SPE Aberdeen board member and chief executive of the Granite City-based Oil and Gas Innovation Centre, said: “Once again, this competition has showcased the superb talent that Gray’s School of Art students have to offer.
“The quality of the entries each year makes it extremely difficult to pick a winner and this year was no different, with four outstanding proposals.
“Alexandra’s trophy design was fantastic and really incorporates what the Offshore Achievement Awards are all about. We look forward to seeing the final trophy being presented to next year’s winners.”
Miss Pate, who is from Dunoon, said: “I am absolutely delighted that my trophy design has been chosen and will be presented to some of the most successful companies and individuals in the offshore energy industry.
“My parents are blacksmiths and our family business has been in operation for more than a century. This was where my inspiration to incorporate steel into my design came from.”
