WESTMINSTER politicians moved to recognise the North Sea oil and gas industry’s contribution to the UK economy.
A motion has been lodged in the Commons calling on the UK Government to work to ensure the sector continues to thrive.
Mike Weir, SNP energy spokesman and Angus MP, tabled the motion, and has won the support of north and north-east Liberal Democrats John Thurso, Sir Robert Smith and Malcolm Bruce.
Mr Weir said: “What we are trying to do is get the government to take a clear strategic view on the future of oil and gas.
“Obviously the sudden tax raid last year undermined confidence.
“It’s an important industry for the north and north-east and there has to be confidence in it.
“It’s also important for young people to understand that there remains a long-term future for the oil and gas industry. It has got many decades left in it.
“Not only that, but many of the skills are transferable to renewable industries.
“It’s important to make sure the industry is kept at the forefront of government thinking and not have situations like the last Budget.”
In March, Mr Osborne revealed plans to fund a 1p cut in fuel duty by asking the North Sea oil and gas industry to hand over an extra £10billion in tax over the next five years.
