Cairn Energy’s Indian subsidiary said today it had made a gas discovery in the Mannar Basin off Sri Lanka.
Through its subsidiary, Cairn Lanka, Cairn India said it found 78ft of hydrocarbon bearing sandstone in three zones in the Barracuda well.
The well is the second in a three-well frontier basin programme by operator and 100% owner Cairn Lanka.
Cairn said it would now evaluate the well results and assess the commercial potential of the discovery.
An update would be given after the end of the programme, expected by early next year.
