Aberdeen company Oceanscan has snapped up a Staffordshire firm for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition of Sercal Non Destructive Test Equipment, based in Cannock, adds eight employees, including founder and managing director Bert Dodd, who also owned the business and is being retained as a consultant until March 31.
Bridge of Don-based Oceanscan, which supplies technology to the oil and gas, defence, petrochemical, renewables and nuclear industries, now has 60 employees in four locations.
Its operations include a branch in Lowestoft and a recently-opened office in Houston in the US.
Oceanscan owner and managing director Ken Hunter said: “The acquisition is an obvious strong strategic fit with Oceanscan’s growth strategy.
“We believe it will provide a number of commercial, operational and financial benefits. Sercal’s expertise will enhance our calibration and rental offerings, and provide the structure to deliver these services on a national level.”
Oceanscan – founded by Mr Hunter, Andy Gray and Jon Mears in 1989 – specialises in ultrasonic calibration services for the UK oil and gas industry, while Sercal’s customers mainly operate in rail, power generation, steel production, consulting engineering and scientific markets.
The last accounts filed by Oceanscan, for the year to June 30, 2014, show pre-tax profits of £2.13million on turnover of £16.5million.
