India’s government said it will partly fund a $2billion gas pipeline project linking five eastern states.
The move is being made to help kick-start economic growth in the the region.
The country’s oil minister said the move will be made in a region which has “trailed” the rest of the country.
The 2,500km pipeline will be built by state-run GAIL Inidia and will be the first time the government has offered finance for such a project.
Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government will meet 40 percent of the cost of the pipeline that will run through the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha, which together account for nearly 40 percent of India’s 1.3 billion population.
