Four workers have died and another two are missing after their helicopter crashed on its way to a platform owned by Chevron off Angola, the US firm said.
The helicopter did not arrive at the Tombua-Landana platform after leaving a base at Malongo port yesterday afternoon.
Chevron said in a statement that the craft, operated by Heli-Malongo, was carrying five passengers and one pilot.
One of the passengers was an employee while four others were contractors.
Chevron said: “The helicopter did not reach its intended destination. It was carrying five passengers and one pilot.
“Extensive search and rescue activities continue for those who remain missing.”
Chevron did not disclose the victims’ identities, though local media reports indicate there were two of them were expats and rest were Angolan.
It is unclear which make and model of helicopter was involved in the incident.
Nineteen marine vessels and three helicopters are engaged in the search and rescue operation, Chevron said.
In 2011, Sikorsky said it had delivered three of its S-76 helicopters to Heli-Malongo.
At the time, Sikorsky said the trio would be used to form Angola’s first ever dedicated search and rescue (SAR) service, not for transporting people to and from rigs.
