Former billionaire Eike Batista has been detained by police after returning to Brazil to face allegations of bribing a former governor.
His detention brings an end to the flamboyant entrepreneur’s brief stint as an international fugitive.
Batista, 60, was once estimated to be worth in excess of $30billion and was considered one of the world’s richest men.
He lost most of his fortune in the global commodities crash.
According to reports, Batista flew from New York to Rio de Janerio overnight, after police raided his luxury home last week.
Batista told the Globo television network at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport: “I am returning to answer to the courts, as is my duty.
“It’s time for me to clear this up.”
Federal prosecutors in Brazil are leading a huge probe into political kickbacks made by major companies in return for lucrative contracts from state-run oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA.
