The UK Government has ranked the oil sector as a “low priority” industry in the Brexit negotiations, a news report said today.
The steel and business services industries have also been given a low standing, while air transport, pharmaceuticals, automotive and textiles are at the upper end of the scale, The Times reported, citing a leaked document.
The list was included in a document drawn up by officials and circulated in November, according to the report.
One source told The Times that the list did not mean the government thought the “low” priority industries were generally unimportant.
Rather, it indicated the degree of support the government thinks the sectors will need during the Brexit process.
But the report said certain industries who feel Brexit will lead to complications had been made to feel uneasy.
They are worried they won’t get the help they need, The Times said.
A government spokesperson was cited as saying: “We do not comment on partial accounts of leaked documents … . We have been doing detailed work to prepare for the negotiation, analysing more than 50 sectors and cross-cutting issues.”
