Scotland could become a world leading exporter of oil and gas field extension and decommissioning solutions, according to government ministers.
The claim was made as North Sea industry heads met at the launch of the Oil and gas Technology Centre in Aberdeen.
Under-secretary of state for Scotland Lord Andrew Dunlop helped open the centre alongside Scottish minister for business, innovation and energy Paul Wheelhouse MSP.
The Scottish cabinet minister said that that the positioning of the centre could make the north-east a world exporter of skills and technology relating to mature basins.
Mr Wheelhouse said: “That has huge potential opportunities for Scotland and the wider UK supply chain. But we can only do that if we are ahead of the game in terms of technology.
“This is a sign of confidence in the industry from both governments, saying we’ve got faith in the future of the oil and gas industry. We are not at the end of the road, far from it.
“There’s a bright future in the industry and we believe that the north-east of Scotland can become a global centre.”
Lord Dunlop added: “We are very keen to work with the Scottish Government and the industry on sector deals.
“I think huge progress has been made, momentum has been established and the key now is to keep that pace as we go forward.”
Chief executive of Oil and Gas UK, Deirdre Michie also welcomed the launch of the OGTC.
She said: “The timing of this is really pertinent. The industry has been through some really challenging times.
“As we look ahead we see the challenges that are still out there and the role technology and innovation can help to unlock some real opportunities and ensure a sustainability for this industry.
“We are building on a positive legacy. We are an industry of ‘firsts’ – whether it’s pipeline length or depths of driving. We have a tremendous legacy we can tap into and a heritage that will help take us to the next level via the OGTC.
“There is still more to do and we recognise that. But when people start to see the benefits you can see the momentum building.”
