Greenpeace activists have taken to kayaks to protest against Arctic oil exploration at a rig in northern Norway.
The organisation said oil companies plan to use the Songa Enabler rig to drill further north in the Norwegian Arctic than ever before.
Statoil recently lifted a suspension on the rig ahead of the start-up of an exploration campaign in the Barents Sea.
Statoil plans to drill 5-7 exploration wells in the Barents in 2017.
Truls Gulowsen, head of Greenpeace Norway, said: “This rig is heading off to sea to drill in the melting Arctic. Any new oil well is an unacceptable threat to the climate and puts people’s homes, health and families at risk.
“We demand that the Norwegian government and Statoil cease and desist all new operations in the Arctic.”
Greenpeace earlier filed a lawsuit against the Norwegian Government last year to oppose plans for drilling so far north.
A start date of November 13 has been set for the trial at Oslo District Court.
