The managing director of an engineering firm which works with clients in several fields, including oil and gas has urged the oil and gas sector to learn from other industries and embrace collaboration.
Alex Vaughan, of the Costain Group, shared his experience of collaboration in the provision of water with a wide range of figures from the oil and gas industry at the Oil and Gas UK conference today.
Mr Vaughan worked with Severn Trent water, and by creating an atmosphere where people were encouraged to share ideas, and work together, he helped them to achieve improved results.
He said: “By collaborating more, we can achieve so much more. We have been really surprised by what we have achieved by collaborating in different ways.
The firm managed to cut a two-and-a-half-year project down to six months, with efficiency improvements and cost savings.
His company also achieved similar results with Thames Water in London.
Mr Vaughan advised those in attendance to learn from the example of what collaboration in other industries has helped achieve – if they want to improve efficiency in their own firm.
He also stressed the importance of knowing exactly what the purpose of any collaboration is.
He said: “The first thing we need to do is be asking the big questions of the supply chain.
“The big question is what is the outcome that you are trying to achieve.”
