Centrica is to cease operations at its Rough site – which is the UK’s largest gas storage facility.
The group announced in April this year that it was assessing the future for the site’s commercial operations.
One possible option was to return the facility to injection and storage operations.
The company said that due to the “high operating pressures involved” and the fact that the facilities are at the end of their design life, they couldn’t safely return to perform that operation.
It added that seasonal storage and the cost of refurbishing or rebuilding the facility would not be economical.
As a result the company hopes to end Rough’s status as a storage facility and to produce all recoverable cushion gas at the field, which is estimated at 183 bcf.
