Oil giant, Chevron, is to give the American Red Cross a $1million donation to aid the immediate relief efforts under way as a consequence of hurricane that hit Texas over the weekend.
The gift will go to the support of affected regions such as Corpus Christi and the larger Houston area.
Cheveron has also pledged that it will match all donations made to the crisis by its employees.
The Houston area represents the largest contingent of Chevron employees anywhere in the world and the company has numerous business interests across the state of Texas.
Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross, said: “The Red Cross is working around the clock in extremely challenging conditions in Texas to help people impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We couldn’t do it without the generosity of our donors – like Chevron. With their support, the Red Cross can be there when disaster strikes to respond with shelter, food and the necessary supplies to ensure people are cared for, and to help during the recovery process. We’re extremely grateful for their support.”
Jeff Shellebarger, president of Chevron’s North American Exploration and Production Company, said: “Our thoughts are with all the people who have suffered tremendous losses and disruption from this catastrophic hurricane and related flooding. As a business with deep ties to Texas and Houston, this donation will assist with the initial critical relief process. We will continue to work with responding organizations to support on-going recovery efforts, which we hope can begin soon.”
