Alaskan regulators have ordered the shut-in of all production in the state’s North Slope following a leak last year.
All operators have been ordered to cease operations after the “uncontrolled release of liquids” at Prudhoe Bay was linked to the outer casing of the well being set in thawing permafrost.
Operators have until the end of December to comply as a review of the situation is carried out.
Prudhoe Bay is the largest oil field in the region and is operated by BP with partners ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips.
