German energy firm Wintershall has struck gas with its Balderbraa wildcat well in the Norwegian Sea.
The well was drilled about 115 kilometres southwest of the Aasta Hansteen field in the northern part of the Norwegian Sea.
The discovery is thought to contain between 7 and 19 billion standard cubic metres (Sm3) of recoverable gas and between 1 and 3 million Sm3 of recoverable condensate.
The well was the first to be drilled in production licence 894.
It will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.
The well was drilled by the West Phoenix drilling facility, which will now proceed to Invergordon for reclassification.
