STATOILHYDRO has struck oil and gas with the first well drilled on the Obesum prospect in the Norwegian sector of the Barents Sea.
The probe was drilled using the rig, Polar Pioneer. Well 7222/6-1S went to a total depth of 2,825m (9,269ft), with hydrocarbons proven in the Triassic sandstone interval. StatoilHydro says it is too early to estimate the size of the finds, and further data processing is required. A further well is planned for later this year.
The well has been permanently plugged and abandoned and the Polar Pioneer moved to drill an appraisal well on the Tornerose discovery, made in 2006 on nearby block 7122/6.
