The UK’s offshore health and safety regime could be adopted across Europe after a vote by politicians in Strasbourg today.
Euro MPs debated EU-wide laws on oil and gas safety standards last night and are expected to come to a decision on the proposals today.
The European Commission had previously said there should be one piece of legislation covering all member states, but the UK Government and the country’s oil and gas industry said centralised regulation could undermine the work done in the North Sea.
Shares in oil and gas explorer Desire Petroleum fell 11% to 19p yesterday after it said it was continuing to look for finance to restart its drilling campaign.
Announcing its interim results for the six months to the end of June, the UK-based Falklands oil and gas explorer said it had sufficient funds to cover rig and equipment costs and working capital.
It said its cash balance was insufficient to drill further wells despite having “encouraging” prospects.
The chief executive of Aberdeen oil and gas technology firm Petrotechnics will speak at the third annual Process Safety Management Summit in Abu Dhabi next week. Phil Murray will give a talk on how technology can be used to introduce process safety management to operations in the region. The conference takes place between Monday and Wednesday.
Engineering, project-management and consultancy firm Amec said yesterday it had again been ranked the industry leader in the oil equipment and service sector of the worldwide Dow Jones sustainability index for 2011-12.
North-east engineering firm Ace Winches said yesterday it had signed an agreement with Newfoundland Offshore Services which would lead to the Canadian company acting as its agent and distributor. Ace said the deal would help the company introduce its hydraulic winches and marine deck machinery to the Canadian market.
