ENGINEER and entrepreneur Tony Trapp has launched a new business focused on offshore wind. Its name is O-Power.
Trapp is best known in oil&gas circles for his subsea engineering prowess and for setting up The Engineering Business in the north-east of England, which was sold to the Dutch group, IHC Merwede, in March 2008.
He is now indulging his passion for renewables by setting up OP, the purpose of which is to develop new technology in offshore engineering, particularly offshore wind.
OP offers concept development and analysis right through to the supply and installation of product.
The firm’s core team already has long experience in the design and build of many kinds of offshore systems in offshore wind, wave and tidal stream, oil&gas, submarine telecom and defence.
Trapp’s new creation is independent and described as being “founded and staffed by a team of engineers”. It is based in Northumberland.
“I am really excited to be starting this new venture with such a talented and enthusiastic group of people,” said Trapp.
“We plan to rapidly expand the O-Power team with inspired and determined engineers who have in themselves the basic ingredients of ambition, belief and courage.
“I am confident that we can develop some excellent engineering solutions that can help to make a difference to offshore wind systems, improving the technology to increase safety and reduce cost.”
The creation of OP is supported by IHC Merwede, a world leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment and a major supplier of specialist offshore technology and vessels.
IHC Merwede continues to own and develop what is now IHC Engineering Business, of which Trapp remains non-executive chairman of EB. He originally founded that business in 1997, together with three colleagues.
