Global power and automation technology group ABB said yesterday it had launched a marine-energy appraisal service to lower power consumption on vessels.
The service identifies equipment on boats which could benefit from a variable-speed drive (VSD), which alters its power usage according to demand. ABB said technology such as seawater cooling pumps, chilled-water pumps and engine-room ventilation fans all operated at full capacity all the time.
The firm said VSDs could halve a vessel’s energy consumption.
