A FORMER fisherman from Macduff has been named as the recipient of this year’s FMC Technologies scholarship at Robert Gordon University, in Aberdeen.
Steven Nicol, 26, a third-year mechanical and offshore-engineering student at the university, wants to work in the oil and gas industry after graduating.
He was selected from 19 candidates for the scholarship.
Mr Nicol said: “I am honoured to have been awarded the FMC scholarship.
“It will give me the opportunity to gain valuable experience of working in an engineering environment.
“Furthermore, it will give me the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge I have gained during my time at university.
“My hopes for my future career are to gain employment in the oil and gas industry, where I have set my sights on becoming a chartered engineer.
“I believe gaining this scholarship will be highly beneficial to my career in this industry.”
FMC is a global provider of technologically advanced products, including subsea trees, controls, manifold and tie-in systems and wellhead equipment for the oil and gas industry.
Its scholarship was established in 2007 to support the professional development of particularly promising mechanical engineering students at RGU.
Students chosen receive a bursary of £1,750 for each of the final two years of their degree.
In addition, there are vocational placements and the dedicated mentorship of a representative from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Mr Nicol will also have the opportunity of employment with FMC after he completes his degree.
His vocational placement will be at FMC’s subsea division in Aberdeen.
Grant Maxwell, associate head of the RGU engineering school, said: “The school is very grateful for the scholarship provided by FMC. This is an excellent opportunity for Steven to gain experience of working in the engineering industry. This will be a great benefit to his academic studies and to his future career.”
