NEIL Bruce, one of the north-east of Scotland’s most influential businessmen, has been made an honorary professor at Aberdeen Business School – The Robert Gordon University.
Bruce is currently chief operating officer, natural resources and power and process, at Amec. He has more than 25 years’ experience of the oil&gas industry and has been with Amec since 1997, becoming COO of the organisation’s natural-resources business in 2006 and COO of its power and process since just before Christmas.
He is also an executive director of Amec plc.
Bruce has served in a variety of key roles within the wider industry, including as a past chairman of the Offshore Contractors Association. He currently sits on the UK’s International Oil and Gas Business Advisory Board and is a fellow of the Institute of Directors, where he recently won an award for developing young people.
He will deliver lectures to Aberdeen Business School students on leadership and management from this month. Working with, and encouraging, promising young stars of the future has become something of a passion of his at Amec.
Bruce said: “I am proud to have been given this honorary professorship, which I see as a symbol both of the excellent long-term relationship Amec has with RGU and of my long-held belief in developing people. The development opportunities I myself have been given have been fundamental to my career. I now hope to help others in the same way.
ABS dean Rita Marcella said: “His career is a shining example of how hard work and talent can get you to the top. We are fortunate at ABS to have a relationship with major business figures such as Neil, and our students can only benefit enormously from his expertise.”
