UK oil and gas explorer Hurricane Exploration said today it had found light oil and gas condensate in its west of Shetland Whirlwind well.
Tests using Awilco’s Willhunter drilling rig meant consultant RPS Energy updated the reserves estimate for Whirlwind.
Best estimate contingent reserves are now estimated at 373million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) of light oil and gas and 301million barrels of gas condensate.
A lower estimate puts the figures at 98million boe of light oil and gas and 91million boe of gas condensate.
Hurricane chief executive Robert Trice said: “The discovery of light oil/condensate at Whirlwind is extremely good news as it is located in close proximity to our Lancaster basement discovery, and further reinforces Hurricane’s presence in the west of Shetland.
“However, the true significance of Whirlwind to the region will have to wait until further evaluation of the data is completed followed by targeted appraisal drilling.”
Hurricane first drilled the well in 2010, when it found oil in 433 feet of limestone. Drilling has now been suspended.
The firm was set up in 2005 and is based in Hampshire, but has an office in Aberdeen.
As well as Whirlwind it has the Lancaster and Typhoon prospects and Strathmore and Tempest discoveries, all west of Shetland.
