This year’s Press and Journal Energy Ball gave a £30,000 boost to Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal at the Offshore Europe oil show in Aberdeen today.
P&J editor Damian Bates handed over a cheque to leading businessman Stewart Milne, a committee member for the charity.
The money was raised at last month’s sell-out ball at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, which attracted around 1,100 people.
Mr Milne, chairman and chief executive of Stewart Milne Group, said: “This is fantastic support from the P&J and the oil sector.
“The Energy Ball has become the premier event in the area and we very much appreciate the decision to donate this money to us.”
Mr Bates added: “We are delighted that our wonderful event is able to give this level of support to Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal, which is raising cash for a cause close to everyone’s heart.”
The campaign is raising £3million for a new centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
It will provide practical and emotional support for people with cancer and their loved ones from across the north-east.
The appeal is being fronted by Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation.
The charity was set up by Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie in memory of his mother, with the backing of the P&J.
Meanwhile, Mr Montgomerie was at the Offshore Europe show today, where the campaign was given its biggest boost to date.
He visited the BG Group stand to receive a £300,000 donation for Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal.
Mr Montgomerie said it was a fantastic gesture from the company.
The golfer was paying his first visit to Offshore Europe and he was impressed with the exhibits and stands.
He added: “It’s unbelievable what is on show here. Without oil and gas, the whole world would collapse.”
