OIL and gas giant BP is branded “senile” by environmental groups Greenpeace and Platform in a new advertising campaign launched today.
BP, celebrating its 100th anniversary, is being criticised for being involved in controversial tar sands projects in Canada.
A statement from Greenpeace yesterday said: “Extracting oil from tar sands emits tens of thousands of tonnes of climate-changing gases every day.
“It also releases up to five times more greenhouse gases than conventional oil production.
“At full capacity, BP’s tar sands project will emit the equivalent of over 24,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a day.”
Greenpeace executive director John Sauven added: “BP must be going senile. It’s the only excuse for their involvement in tar sands. Not only are they losing money, they’re also belching out thousands of tonnes of climate-wrecking gases every day.”
A spokesman for BP, which currently has no oil/tar sand production, said the firm had no comment to make on any advert Greenpeace was planning.
