Finalists were announced yesterday for the second annual UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards.
Organised by Step Change in Safety and Oil and Gas UK (OGUK), the scheme acknowledges contributions to safety by individuals and companies.
The presentation ceremony will be held on Wednesday, April 20, in the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel, at Blairs near Aberdeen.
There will be awards for safety leadership, safety representative, preventative safety action by an individual, most promising individual, and innovation in safety by a company.
The safety leadership finalists are Colin Bruce, of Wood Group Engineering (North Sea); Ivan Gibbon, of KCA Deutag, and Graham Spencer, of Marathon Oil UK. Contesting the safety rep of the year award are Stuart Mackay, of Chevron North Sea; John Murray, of BIS Salamis, and William Watt, of Petrofac.
Colin Grant, of Archer; Iain Park, of Total E&P UK, and Mike Ross, of Aker Solutions are vying for the honour for preventative safety action.
The contenders for the most promising individual title are John Evans, of CAN Offshore; David Mackenzie, of Wood Group Engineering (North Sea), and Roger Smith, of Petrofac.
Three companies – BP, Nats and Talisman Energy (UK) – are shortlisted for the innovation in safety award.
OGUK chief executive Malcolm Webb said: “We received a large number of very high-quality entries for each award category, which made the judges’ job of shortlisting candidates very tough.
“The finalists’ commitment to improving safety deserves special recognition. These awards provide the perfect opportunity for their contributions and ideas to be recognised and shared, in order to achieve our goal of making the UK the safest place to work in the worldwide oil and gas industry.”
A sixth winner for services to safety will be chosen by the joint chairmen of Step Change: John Forrest, vice-president of Talisman Energy (UK) and Schlumberger UK chairman Gordon Ballard.
