A MINI nuclear reactor developed in the US by Hyperion Power Generation is to be jointly manufactured, marketed and sold through a joint venture being forged with Alternate Energy Holdings.
The 25MW refrigerator-sized power module is regarded as one of the most innovative products ever to come out of the nuclear industry. Because of its small size, the power plant’s applications are limitless and could fuel a huge variety of important facilities – including hospitals, desalination plants, emergency facilities, industrial parks, factories, military bases, office blocks and even small towns – for many years.
Once a unit reaches the end of its operational life, the intention is to simply provide a replacement and recycle the original machine back to its manufacturer. The modular format means the device can be used in multiples tailored exactly to requirement.
Hyperion describes itself as a privately held company which has been formed to commercialise a small modular nuclear reactor designed by scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the US. The reactor has been deliberately designed to fill a previously unmet need for a transportable power source that is presumed safe, clean, sustainable and cost-efficient.
