While KCA Deutag has not disclosed the value of the deal, it will be substantial and continues a relationship with Sakhalin Energy since 2003.
The company says that “significant factors” in the success of the tender include its commitment to health, safety and environment, having achieved 12 months without a recordable incident, continued focus on operational improvement and “impressive” non-productive time (NPT) figures.
Rune Lorentzen, senior VP platforms, said of the win: “I am proud to lead the platform drilling division within KCA Deutag.
“We have secured this long-term contract by delivering safe, effective and trouble-free operations and consistently meeting our customer’s expectations.
“Securing this contract provides a platform to develop further opportunities in the Sakhalin region where successful exploration activities will undoubtedly lead to more long-term development projects.
“This long-term contract will also enable us to further develop the local capability required to deliver successful services for Sakhalin Energy and future clients.”
Sakhalin Energy technical director Valery Cholovsky said: “We are pleased to continue our professional relationship with KCADeutag.
“They have done good work for us helping to put the Lunskoye and Piltun-B platform rigs into operation, and then drilling the gas wells in time to achieve the first LNG (liquefied natural gas) exports from the Russian Federation.
“I am particularly pleased with their safety record and their efforts to employ and pass on their knowledge to Russian nationals.
“I look forward to a long continued and mutually beneficial working relationship with them.”
The first SEIC contract, awarded in 2003, ran for seven years. It covered platform drilling services on the Molikpaq installation.
This work started in early 2004 following an extensive rig ‘make ready’ programme, together with platform drilling services on the Lunskoye-A and Piltun-B platforms, which began drilling operations in 2007 and 2008.
In addition, KCA Deutag was responsible for supplying engineering, drilling operations and construction support services during the construction of the Lunskoye and Piltun drilling facilities.
Closer to home, just before Christmas at Bad Bentheim in Germany, the company presented to the industry, its new highly-automated heavy land rig due to start work in the Netherlands in a few weeks.
The T-700 HLR land rig has been secured on a long-term basis by NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij), which had a strong input into the specification.
Design and fabrication was undertaken by Bentec, KCA Deutag’s wholly-owned German subsidiary and world-leading rig design and manufacturing company.
The key design feature of the T-700 HLR is its highly-automated pipe-handling concept, which increases optional efficiency while decreasing the human interaction on the rig floor. This should enable safer and trouble-free operations.”
