OIL and gas firm Valiant Petroleum today announced a disappointing result on the first well on the Zapffe exploration prospect.
Valiant, 10% owner on the field, said drilling operations had completed on Zapffe, located in PL518 in the Norwegian Barents Sea.
The 7121/9-1 well, drilled by the Aker Barents semisubmersible rig, failed to encounter reservoir sands in either of the target Lower Cretaceous or Upper Jurassic horizons.
It had hoped to find a pinch-out play located adjacent to the large Goliat discovery made in 2000.
Gross prospective resources associated with the Zapffe prospect had been estimated by Valiant to be some 170million barrels of oil equivalent.
Valiant said the well would now be drilled to total depth and then logged before being plugged and abandoned.
DONG is operator and 40% owner of the field with other partners being North Energy (30%) and Front Exploration (20%).
