AMONG those to be honoured today in the new UK oil and gas industry safety awards organised by Step Change in Safety and Oil and Gas UK is Bob Kyle.
He will get a lifetime achievement award for services to safety at the ceremony in the Ardoe House Hotel, near Aberdeen.
The safety consultant with Oil and Gas UK was chosen for the honour by the joint chairmen of Step Change: John Forrest, vice-president of Talisman Energy (UK), and Gordon Ballard, chairman of Schlumberger UK.
They said: “The winning candidate has worked tirelessly and selflessly on industry safety issues for 25 years, his knowledge and enthusiasm are second to none, and his views and experience are sought out by many.
“He has held many influential positions within industry over the years including chairing the HSE industry liaison forum, sitting on the oil industry advisory committee, expert witness at the Cullen inquiry, working with the regulator on safety case implementation, and involving himself heavily in the development of a whole raft of industry guidance, particularly in the immediate post-Piper (Alpha disaster) period.
“He has played a pivotal role in improving health and safety performance in our industry over two decades.”
Mr Kyle said: “This is a great honour. I have often been described as the glue in offshore safety, as the one who links a number of different safety committees, initiatives and work fronts together, however, I never expected to be given special recognition for what I consider to be ‘just doing my job’. I put a lot of hard work and diligence into my work as everything I do can make a real difference to safety and can prevent a potential incident or injury.”
Today’s award presentation ceremony will be attended by about 350 people.
