Nearly 3,000 blocks in the UK North Sea are to be offered out to oil and gas explorers today as the latest licensing round is opened.
Energy Minister Charles Hendry is to open the latest round of exploration opportunities as part of the 27th offshore licensing round.
Nearly 2,800 blocks are being offered following the recently-closed 26th round.
Mr Hendry said: “I am very pleased to launch the 27th offshore oil and gas licensing round. With around 20billion barrels of oil still to be extracted, the UK continental shelf has many years of productivity left. The industry supports nearly half a million jobs and today’s announcement will ensure a wealth of outstanding long-term career opportunities for people of all ages.”
The round closes for applications on May 1.
