Two gas-fired furnaces came crashing down yesterday in the final stages of decommissioning part of the St Fergus gas terminal near Peterhead.
The twin 112ft towers have been the most visible presence of the St Fergus plant’s Miller receiving facilities since 1992 and were among the last significant items to be removed from the site.
Gas export from the North Sea Miller field was through a pipeline system to the Total Exploration and Production UK-operated terminal and then on via a landline to Peterhead Power Station.
In 2007, Miller reached the end of its economic oil and gas producing life and the decommissioning process began. The furnaces were toppled in a series of controlled explosions carried out by demolition specialist Keltbray.
Work will continue at the Miller site as further plant and equipment is dismantled over the next month.
