UK-based offshore workers employed across the globe have won the right to be protected by British employment law.
In a landmark ruling at the Supreme Court inLondon yesterday, Lord Hope said that employment tribunals have the jurisdiction to hearunfair dismissal claimsfor people who work overseas.
The case – which has been driven by Aberdeen-based law firm Quantum Claims – will affect the rights of thousands of offshore workers.
Ismail Ravat, who was employed by Aberdeen-based energy firm Halliburton, but worked in Libya and lived in England, raised the case.
Jake Molloy, of the RMT union, said: “It’s good news for a change from the Supreme Court in that workers who have been deployed to other places around the globe that still have a relationship with their employer in the UK can now defend their employment rights here in the UK.”
