A senior MP has said lessons must be learned from the gas leak at a North Sea platform.
West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine Liberal Democrat MP Sir Robert Smith also called on Total and the UK Government to be vigilant and closely monitor the risks at the evacuated Elgin rig.
The MP, a member of the Commons energy and climate change select committee and vice-chairman of the oil and gas all-party parliamentary group, said: “Whilst the priority is to bring the gas leak under control, it is vital that any lessons learned about the cause of the leak are shared with other operators to ensure there is no repeat of such an incident.”
He added: “The fact that there is no oil in the well reduces the environmental threat, but the government and Total must continue to monitor the risk.”
