Rural Affairs and Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead last night said: “The Scottish Government continues to closely monitor developments at the Elgin gas installation in the North Sea.
“Efforts by Total to resolve the gas leak areongoing. As the situation stands, impact on the environment – which is the Scottish Government’s area of responsibility – is minimal.
“While health and sa-fety responsibility in the offshore industry is currently reserved to Westminster, Scottish ministers are being kept fully informed of developments.
He added: “I have spoken to both the health and safety manager at Total UK and the UK Energy Minister, Charles Hendry, to discuss the matter and to highlight the importance of continued openness and transparency as they work towards a solution.”
