Aberdeen was the only major UK city to create more businesses than it lost when the UK emerged from recession in 2010, said national accounting group UHY Hacker Young. The Granite City is reported to have created a net figure of 3.7 new businesses per 10,000 people in 2010.
By contrast, the research found that the top UK towns and cities witnessed an average loss of 10 businesses per 10,000 people.
Edinburgh was the second-best performer with a loss of 2.4 businesses per 10,000 people while London ranked 28th with a loss rate of 9.6 businesses.
Ian Williams, head of Campbell Dallas in Aberdeen, said Aberdeen’s strength was its global mindset. “There is a distinct market shift from oil and gas exploration towards technical services. Aberdeen businesses tend to be export-led with growing confidence. While the rest of the country is preoccupied with recession, we are preoccupied with delivering new services to new markets.”
