Oil and gas installations across the North Sea are signing up for a new initiative which aims to create a healthier offshore workforce.
Rig Run 2012, which starts on July 27 and runs for a month, will also raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
Organisers hope to capture the mood of the London 2012 Olympics by encouraging workers to clock up as many miles as possible on cardiovascular gym equipment.
The inter-platform format of the competition will also encourage team spirit and get employees from different companies working together, they say.
Staff from Shell, Talisman and other oil and gas companies will be able to track their progress via www.runrig.org
Rachel Kidd, offshore wellbeing adviser at Aberdeen occupational health firm Innovative Health Solutions (IHS), will make presentations on motivation, sports psychology and exercise science during the fitness campaign.
Last year, Ms Kidd climbed Mount Kilimanjaro as part of a team which raised £10,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and she hopes to use that as well as her expertise in sports and exercise science to benefit participants of Rig Run 2012.
IHS director Louise Martin said: “A lot of the offshore workers are fit and healthy already but may have let their exercise regime slip. We see this as an incentive to get them back into it. Part of the sign-up fee will automatically be donated to the British Heart Foundation and the companies will also have a further option to donate 25p for every mile run to the charity.
Claire Chernouski, a dietetic consultant at IHS, added: “There are now more non-accidental deaths from the likes of heart attacks than there are accidental deaths in the UK offshore industry, which shows there is a real need to improve the health of the workforce.”
