Global oilfield service company Archer said yesterday a renewed contract for Marathon Oil was creating at least 80 jobs within its Aberdeen operations.
The new five-year deal comes 19 years after Archer – previously Seawell – was first given the task of carrying out work for Marathon in the UK.
The value of the latest renewal was not disclosed.
Archer said it would directly result in a minimum of 80 people being added to its UK North Sea crews to meet the needs of planned operational activities.
North Sea general manager Kjetil Bjornson said the new contract showed the strength of Archer’s long-term business relationship with Marathon, adding: “It confirms Archer’s position as a leading provider of platform drilling services in the North Sea.”
It is now contracted to provide drilling, maintenance and engineering services on the three platforms Marathon operates in the Brae field.
The new deal runs until 2017 but comes with an extension option, which could continue the arrangement until 2022.
Archer now has 16 long-term contracts for platforms in the UK North Sea.
Globally, its drilling teams help to secure production on more than 32 offshore platforms across four continents and operate 70-plus mobile land rigs in the Americas.
The company’s offices at Dyce, in Aberdeen, arethe base for around 200 onshore and 530 offshore workers.
