Anadarko and Eni are exploring the possibility of joint development of their massive gas discoveries offshore Mozambique with an eye on establishment of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on the East African state’s coastline.
Anadarko said East Africa is poised to challenge Qatar and Australia as a dominant producer of LNG.
The company said that the Rovuma Area 1 discovery alone likely contains a up to 100trillion cu.ft and that it intends to transport that gas to shore for LNG production destined for Asian markets.
Such an LNG facility would probably cost about $15billion for the offshore development and the onshore two-train production facility and terminal. A decision is due next year on the project investment with an onstream target of 2018.
