The North Sea Chapter of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) has been left greatly saddened by the death of Val Hood on September 15 following a long battle with cancer.
Val had worked for the Chapter for 14 years, playing a major role in bringing the drilling community together to discuss important issues as well as organising major events such as the IADC NSC Annual Safety Awards celebration.
Darren Sutherland, of Prospector Offshore Drilling and current co-chair of the chapter, said: “Val was held in high regard by all who met her – a professional, dedicated person who cared about the industry and worked tirelessly to help bring about improvements.
“She was the backbone of the IADC here in Aberdeen and her passing is a massive loss to us.
“I believe I speak for all of my drilling colleagues when I say that we – the North Sea drilling community, owe Val a huge debt of gratitude and appreciation.
“Messages have been coming in from individuals around the world expressing their sadness but also their thanks for her tremendous support and guidance over the years.”
Val, 55, was born in Arbroath and moved to Aberdeen to study languages at Aberdeen University before working for several years with operator Chevron.
She then took a career break to bring up her family before joining IADC. As well as being involved with charity donations through IADC, Val was also personally involved with fundraising for local cancer charities. Donations are currently being made online in her memory to CLAN through her Just Giving page.
She is survived by her husband George, son Adam and daughters Leanne and Steph.
The International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) is a trade association representing drilling contractors and associated companies and the North Sea Chapter is one of 14 IADC Chapters worldwide. With 15 Contractor and 72 Associate members, the North Sea Chapter has been in existence for 39 years.
