Taqa Bratani said yesterday oil had been found in the Contender prospect well in the UK northern North Sea.
The well was drilled from Taqa’s North Cormorant platform with the find expected to be developed under the name Cormorant East.
Taqa said the oil accumulation was expected to have 10-30million barrels of oil in place.
Production will be processed through the North Cormorant platform.
Taqa Bratani managing director Leo Koot said: “This project underpins our commitment to realise the full potential from our acreage. The exploration of near-field potential close to operated fields has benefited from good co-operation between Taqa and the Department of Energy and we look forward to working with our partners to further explore the reservoir.”
Taqa has 60% of the block. Dana Petroleum has 20%, Antrim Resources 8.4%, First Oil Expro 7.6%, and Bridge Energy 4%.
